SimSec Secure Chip-Disc – Hardware Protection from the Outside

Increasingly mobile phones, and iOT devices are being used for making payments, for securing documents, or for authentication. However, any device connected to the internet is vulnerable to malware. This vulnerability increases for phones in the sub-$500 price bracket, and low-cost phones sold in developing countries – phones that often use out-of-date versions of Android.

The prevalence of malware on these devices means that as a payment or other authentication is made, the authentication details can be recorded and used for fraudulent payments or for theft of user funds in a digital wallet. As digital payments with low-cost mobile devices is increasing exponentially, so is fraud and theft from those devices and wallets.

Any software protection inside the device designed to protect from malware is itself vulnerable to that malware, and the same applies to any internal vaults.

Hardware Security from the Outside

To address this problem SimSec thought outside the square – or in this case, outside the device, and created the Secure Chip-Disc. Our Chip-Disc is HARDWARE protection that is OUTSIDE the device and so fully immune from malware. Any malware inside a device has no way to determine, or record, any encryption/ decryption that occurs outside the device. By incorporating an encryption chip and/or and EMV chip inside the SimSec Secure Chip-Disc and attaching the Disc to the outside of the device (within 30cms), any payments encrypted by the Chip-Disc are safe from interference by malware.

Additional Security Layers

By adding a VPN client to each Secure Chip-Disc SimSec have added a further layer of communication security. The Secure Chip-Disc can encrypt voice or data on the fly, and provide a VPN connection for communications. Each Chip-Disc will only pair with a device once, which means that the Chip-Disc cannot be used on any other device.

The SimSec Secure Sticker can be configured for multiple uses or a combination on one Sticker.
